What it is
Midjourney is a self-funded research lab whose image models run in its web app and in Discord. You type a prompt and get a grid of images, then refine them with style references, moodboards and a personalization profile trained on images you rate. The current V8.2 model has an edit model that follows text instructions, combines up to four reference images, and handles inpainting and outpainting. Midjourney also makes image and video models, so stills can be animated into short clips.
It suits people who care most about the look of an image and are happy to iterate. There is no free plan: every account needs a subscription, and plans differ mainly in how much fast GPU time they include. New features such as a Thinking Mode often appear first on its alpha site.
