What it is

GPTZero estimates whether text was written by AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Paste or upload text and it returns an overall AI score and highlights sentences; it also checks plagiarism, hallucinations, citations and grammar, and can replay how a document was written. It works on the web, in Chrome, Google Docs, Google Classroom and Canvas, and through an API. GPTZero is now part of Superhuman, the company behind Grammarly.

It suits educators and editors who need a first screen. A free plan lets you try basic scans; paid plans start at $9.99 a month for 150,000 words. No AI detector is fully reliable, so treat a score as evidence to discuss, not proof.

Best for

  • Teachers checking student work for AI-written text
  • Editors screening submissions
  • Writers showing their work is their own
