What it is
Character.AI lets you chat with AI characters that other users have created, or build your own, from fictional heroes and historical figures to original personas. The company describes itself as interactive entertainment, and it has added stories and other formats around chat. It runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps.
It suits people who want playful conversations and roleplay rather than a work assistant. Basic use is free with ads; a c.ai+ subscription adds perks. Since late 2025 the service has restricted open-ended chat for users under 18, and characters are not reliable sources of fact.
Best for
- Roleplay and interactive storytelling for fun
- Creating and sharing your own characters
- Adults looking for entertainment rather than productivity
